IELTS pronunciation practice: make your speech easier to follow
Use short recordings, specific unclear words and meaningful sentence groups to practise intelligibility rather than copying an accent for its own sake.

Trying to imitate a particular accent can distract you from communicating meaning. A more practical target is speech whose words, emphasis and sentence boundaries are easier to follow. Start with an audible difficulty you can compare before and after practice.
Begin with a short natural recording
Record a brief response and listen without reading a transcript. Which word is difficult to identify even for you? Do some endings disappear? If a teacher or practice partner helps, ask them to locate the unclear segment rather than simply label the pronunciation weak. Select one small target so you can hear whether anything changed. Greater speed does not automatically make speech clearer, and slowing every word mechanically can create a different problem.
Practise the word inside a phrase
Check the difficult word against a reliable audio reference, then use it in two relevant phrases. Notice word stress and how emphasis works in the sentence. Group the sentence according to meaning and highlight important information. This differs from pausing after every individual word. If you use shadowing, choose a short passage you understand. Repeating a long, difficult recording may produce a blurred imitation without helping you identify or control the feature you need.
Return to unscripted speech
After controlled repetition, answer a fresh question without reading. Check whether the practised feature survives in natural speech. Compare recordings several days apart rather than relying on one immediate impression. Automated feedback can suggest targets, but if it misheard a word, compare the suggestion with the actual recording before accepting it. The aim is clearer communication. Neither a short pronunciation exercise nor a change of accent guarantees a particular official speaking score.
For your next session
- Choose one audible difficulty.
- Practise words in phrases.
- Group sentences by meaning.
- Check unscripted transfer.
A common question
Must I completely change my accent?
Focus practice on intelligibility and control. Copying an accent alone does not establish that a response is easier to understand.
