IELTS Writing practice: plan, write and improve

IELTS Writing practice is most valuable when you do more than produce another essay. You need to interpret the prompt, organise ideas and use feedback to identify a specific weakness to improve next time. MaxIELTS includes Academic and General Training Writing tasks and AI-assisted feedback as a practice aid. AI scores are estimates, not official test results.

What should useful Writing feedback explain?

This fixed, original example was prepared with AI assistance to show how to use feedback. It is not a live evaluation of your writing. The excerpt is one paragraph, so no overall essay band is assigned.

Original Task 2 prompt

Some people think local councils should spend more money on public parks than on new car parks. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Draft paragraph

I agree that public parks should usually receive more funding because they give residents a place to exercise without paying an entrance fee. For example, a shaded walking route can help older people stay active during hot weather. However, I am agree that parking near hospitals still needs attention. Councils should consider both needs, but parks are very important things for society.

Three revision priorities

  1. Replace important for society with a specific benefit and explain why it matters.
  2. Separate prioritising park funding from maintaining essential hospital parking so your position remains precise.
  3. Change I am agree to I agree; agree is already a verb.
Review the four criteria without inventing a paragraph band

Task Response

The position and example are relevant, but the original final sentence is vague. Full task coverage and argument development require the complete essay.

Coherence and Cohesion

The paragraph moves from a reason to an example. Explain how the hospital exception fits the main position; adding However alone does not supply that logic.

Lexical Resource

Public parks is precise, while very important things is vague. Essential access to medical services makes the intended meaning clearer. Choose words for precision, not just complexity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy

Correct I am agree to I agree; agree is already a verb. One paragraph cannot establish the grammatical range and accuracy of the whole essay.

Revised paragraph and reasons for the changes
I agree that public parks should usually receive more funding because they offer residents a place to exercise without an entrance fee. A shaded walking route, for example, can help older people stay active in hot weather. However, essential parking near hospitals should be maintained so patients can reach medical services. Councils should prioritise improvements that serve a wide range of residents while protecting this necessary access.

The revision retains the park benefit, explains the hospital exception and connects the conclusion to funding priorities. This is one possible revision, not a unique correct answer or a band guarantee.

Build a Task 2 argument before writing

Plan your position and two supporting ideas. For a full Task 2 response, write at least 250 words. The paragraph below is only a short worked example, not a complete essay or a scored answer.

Original Task 2 practice prompt

Some people think local councils should spend more money on public parks than on new car parks. To what extent do you agree or disagree? Give reasons for your answer and include relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
  1. Choose a clear position: prioritise public parks, while retaining essential parking access.
  2. Develop one benefit of parks and explain how it supports your position.
  3. Acknowledge a practical parking need without abandoning your main argument.

A possible body paragraph

Public parks deserve greater investment because they provide a place for regular exercise without an entry fee. A well-lit walking path, for example, allows residents to be active after work even if they cannot afford a gym. Councils could also add benches and shaded areas so older people can use the same space comfortably. These improvements serve several groups throughout the week, which makes a park a useful public investment. However, accessible parking near hospitals still needs to be maintained.

Why the paragraph is relevant

It moves from a claim to an explanation and a concrete example. It also recognises a limitation. No numerical band is assigned to this short excerpt.

Practice takeaway: Try a different example in your own paragraph. A full essay also needs a clear introduction, organised development and a conclusion that answers the prompt.

What will you practise?

Academic Writing Task 1 asks you to describe visual information such as a chart, table, map or process. General Training Task 1 uses a letter-writing format. Task 2 is an essay task in both versions, though prompts may vary. Choose the correct exam version so you practise the format you will actually need.

Focus on the task requirements, logical organisation, vocabulary precision and grammatical control. In a visual report, selecting the main features is usually more useful than listing every number. In an essay, examples should support the argument rather than introduce unrelated claims.

A focused practice routine

  1. Select Academic or General Training and read the full Writing prompt before drafting.
  2. Make a brief plan identifying the task requirements, structure and the examples or key features you will include.
  3. Write the response independently, then inspect the available AI feedback for specific revision opportunities.
  4. Rewrite a weak paragraph or sentence and compare the revision with your first attempt.

Common mistakes

  • Using the same Task 1 format for Academic charts and General Training letters.
  • Ignoring part of the question while concentrating only on grammar.
  • Treating an automated band estimate as a guarantee of an official IELTS score.

Start by practising a single Writing task and keep a record of two actionable corrections. Apply those corrections on a new prompt before repeating the same kind of exercise.

Frequently asked questions

Does AI feedback replace an IELTS examiner?

No. It provides practice guidance and an estimated band; official scores are only given through the official test.

Is Writing Task 1 the same in Academic and General?

No. Academic Task 1 normally describes visual information, while General Training Task 1 is a letter.
