An overview gives the reader the big picture. Listing every figure does not automatically explain what matters. Before drafting the details, practise selecting the features that would help someone understand the chart without seeing it.

Read the frame before the figures

Check the title, units and time period first. Then look for two prominent features: an overall rise or fall, a dominant category, a large contrast or a change in rank. Not every visual shows change over time. A pie chart for one year calls for comparison of shares rather than a description of growth. Let the information determine your overview instead of forcing a memorised opening onto it.

Try a small invented example

Imagine a practice chart in which bus travel falls from 40 to 25 percent while cycling rises from 10 to 30 percent. Your overview could highlight the opposing directions and the changed relationship between those categories. Saying that the chart contains important changes communicates very little. Check whether your summary describes the whole period or accidentally elevates a temporary movement into the main trend.

Use details to support the summary

In the following paragraphs, select figures that make those comparisons concrete. Avoid inventing explanations: the visual may show what changed without showing why. For your next practice, write two overview sentences before adding numerical evidence. During revision, ask which major feature is missing and whether every claim can be checked against the chart. Keep this as a selection exercise rather than a universal paragraph formula; different visuals need different groupings and comparisons.

For your next session

  • Check units and dates.
  • Choose two prominent features.
  • Avoid unsupported causes.
  • Match details to your overview.

A common question

Must an overview include every number?

No. Its purpose is to select the main features. Relevant figures can support those comparisons in the detail paragraphs.
