Choosing an IELTS route is a requirements decision before it is a study decision. A test that feels more familiar is not useful if your receiving organisation does not accept it. Start with your destination, then build a practice routine around the correct tasks.

Check the receiving organisation first

Record the exact course, professional registration or migration route you are applying for. Read its official English-language requirements and note the accepted test, overall band, minimum component bands and any validity deadline. Another applicant’s experience may involve a different route.

Academic is commonly relevant to higher education, while General Training is used for certain migration and non-degree contexts. These broad descriptions are not booking instructions. Confirm any UKVI requirement and delivery restrictions with the organisation handling your application.

Separate shared skills from different tasks

The main preparation differences are in Reading and Writing. Academic Writing Task 1 asks you to describe visual information; General Training Task 1 asks for a letter responding to a situation. Practising charts alone will not prepare your tone and purpose for a letter.

Listening and Speaking are shared across the two routes. You can practise these together, but check the route label before selecting Reading and Writing work. Raw Reading marks should also be interpreted with the relevant test type in mind.

Build a useful starting point

Try one manageable sample from each skill. Record what slowed you down: understanding instructions, vocabulary, timing or organising a response. This is a practice baseline, not a certified prediction of your final score.

Choose your exam type in the MaxIELTS practice menu and open the matching task. Use AI feedback to select a specific revision, then try a new topic the following week. Compare the same kind of task rather than treating one unusually easy exercise as proof of progress.

For your next session

  • Confirm the accepted test with your receiving organisation.
  • Record minimum component bands separately.
  • Select matching Reading and Writing tasks.
  • Keep a short weekly error log.

A common question

Is General Training always the easier choice?

No. Your required qualification determines the route. Different texts and tasks do not make the two tests interchangeable.
